THE BEST LAID PLANS OF MICE AND MEN….. How often have we heard that fatalistic saying in response to unexpected setbacks? But examination of facts and reconstruction of events underlying major setbacks commonly shows that catastrophe was almost inevitable in each case. The Wiring Organizations for Success Workshop(sm) uses the environment, tools, and processes of knOwhere® to help organizations design themselves for optimally sensing their environment, formulating and testing responses, choosing the best response, implementing flawlessly, and learning from results.

GOALS OF THE WIRING WORKSHOP

  • Through individual and group simulation experience, generate an appreciation in the individual attendees for the close ties among knowledge management, organizational design, personal effectiveness, decision quality, and group success.
  • Apply the learning to designing the optimum flow of information, interpretation, decisions, and feedback in the customer's organization, including: ongoing scanning, focusing, acting, and learning activities; optimum communications, deliberations, and decision-making; effective implementation; and ideal real and virtual workspace within which all of this takes place.
  • Generate organizational success through creating individual commitment to ongoing implementation of the design.
  • Generate strong working relationships that, taken back to the workplace, accelerate accomplishment.

METHODS OF THE WIRING WORKSHOP

  • Pre-workshop films and reading to establish common shared experience of real-world successes/failures.
  • Creating language distinctions around organizational models for success, for example - Seven Domains® - Scan/Focus/Act - Creating the Problem
  • Individual exploration and simulation experience, with learning postmortem exercises.
  • Group exploration and simulation experience, with learning postmortem exercises.
  • Design module for specific customer, including traditional knOwhere DesignShop® Process.
  • Windtunnelling the design through industry and company-specific detailed scenarios.
  • Generating ongoing implementation and iteration plan for the design.

DELIVERABLES FROM THE WIRING WORKSHOP

Identification of the critical set of data the organization needs to sense and interpret in order to navigate to its goal, including finding where the information resides and retrieving the initial values.

  • Creation and trial of evocative displays of the information that make it accessible to individuals and groups.
  • Design of organizational forums for effectively interpreting the data, making decisions based on the interpretations, committing action, and learning from the results.
  • Specification of the roles and competencies needed to operate the system.
  • Design and initial mock-up of the optimum permanent workspace to host this system, including the space itself, furniture, permanent displays, communications hardware and software, facilitation required, and possibly a virtual version to go along with it-in other words, a purpose-built Navigation Center.
  • Preliminary estimate of the cost and time to implement and maintain the design.
  • A "windtunnel" test of the ability of the design to detect and react to at least two scenarios of the future, custom created for the event.
